Abstract

This systematic literature review explores how digital learning tools and online platforms influence student engagement and academic achievement in higher education. Using the PRISMA framework, the review synthesizes findings from 34 empirical studies published between 2015 and 2025. Grounded in Self-Determination Theory and Constructivist Learning Theory, the analysis shows that interactive technologies can foster autonomy, competence, and collaboration—essential for increasing student motivation, participation, and performance. Most studies confirm that effective technology integration improves engagement and learning outcomes when matched with sound pedagogy. However, common barriers such as infrastructure limitations, unequal access, gaps in digital literacy, and lack of alignment with teaching design persist, especially in under-resourced contexts. These challenges highlight the need for robust institutional support, faculty training, and adaptive, student-centered learning approaches. This review offers practical insights for educators and policymakers to bridge engagement and achievement gaps through inclusive, evidence-based digital strategies. It also calls for future research to address context-specific needs and examine long-term impacts of technology-enhanced learning. Overall, the findings affirm that when technology, engagement, and institutional support align, digital learning transforms higher education by driving motivation, performance, and retention.
